Dunavölgy wins Rd2 of Hungarian 200mm champs
The 2nd round of the Hungarian nitro on-road championship was held in Pécs which is one of the oldest but still the most active RC track in the country. The track recently got a new higher rostrum for a much better view, so everybody was looking for some improvements in lap times, which finally came up to the expectations in each category. 1/10th 200mm proved to be the most exciting class of the weekend since 4 to 5 drivers where on the same pace. Qualifications were held under changing weather conditions and the 1st round of qualifying turned out to be the “rocket” round as some rain showers hit the track just before the 2nd leg. With time being too short to completely regain traction until the last round meaning only a few drivers were able to move up in the grid during the day.
Top 4 qualifying result:
1. Pál Vasvári – 23 laps 5:10.047
2. Bajusz Zsolt – 23 laps 5:10.543
3. Péter Varsányi – 23 laps 5:11.962
4. Dániel Dunavölgyi – 23 laps 5:12.354
After the start of the final positions were changing several times, but after the first pit stop Daniel Dunavölgyi was able the build up a 5 second gap in front of pole setter Pál Vasvári. Due to bad refuelling Daniel ran out of fuel at the 8 minute mark which cost him 2 laps and he dropped back to 6th place. After 25 minutes Daniel was back to 3rd place with Gabor Forrai in 2nd place and Pál Vasvári in the lead. After the last round of fuel stops Pál got involved in a collision and lost 3 laps in the pits while Gábor flamed out too. Daniel moved back to the 1st position 1 lap in front of the field. Everything looked set now but the most thrilling moment happened 10 seconds before the final tone when the top 3 drivers were racing bumper to bumper and Gábor Forrai flamed out again in 2nd position right in front of Daniel and Pál. Daniel was able to avoid the collision with Gábor but Pál crashed into Daniel and all of a sudden everybody found themselves off the track. At this point the final turned into a pitman foot-race, as everybody tried to rejoin the race quickly for the final lap. Daniel couldn’t rejoin due to a broken shock absorber but as he was one lap in front of everybody else he kept his 1st place. Péter Varsányi was the lucky one who inherited the 2nd place in front of Pál Vasvári completing the podium leaving a sad Gábor in 4th position.
