Xray Challenge Italy – Report

The 2nd Xray Challenge Italy of 2014 was held at the beautiful Livorno RC Gymnasium facilities in Livorno, Italy. The race was immediately sold out in all classes, underlining its popularity in the Italian RC scene. Some 120 drivers gathered for the two day event which saw perfect weather conditions. The track in Livorno proved to be very challenging with its banked, narrow corners and high traction. Open practice commenced on Friday with most drivers being already present, enjoying the atmosphere.

In Touring Car Modified, qualifying was a very close affair between Alexander Hagberg, who was able to TQ four rounds out of five, and fellow Xray driver and recent ETS finalist, Alessio Menicucci while Xray’s Martin Hudy qualified 3rd. In the finals, Alexander was able to win the first two legs after some close fights with Alessio. Francesco Martini (Xray) rounded out the podium after a great drive.

The Touring Car Stock class also was a close affair, with Marek Cerny taking the TQ, just in front of local driver Nico Catelani. In the end it was Simone Leonardi (Awesomatix) who took the overall win, coming from 7th on the grid, after some messy finals with different winners in all 3 legs. He won in front of fellow Xray drivers Roberto Fabiano and Marek Cerny.

The Formula class was dominated from start to finish by Francesco Martini, running the new Xray prototype formula car, which handled perfectly on this challenging track, where the ETS rules for the formula class was used.
