Roland Strom wins Swedish 1/8 gas onroad champs
This past weekend MHF-u Skarpnäck organised the Swedish championship at their newly repaved Flatenbanan in Stockholm. The event saw racing in 1/10 Nitro touring, electric touring and 1/8 gas Track. An unusually sunny and warm weekend made for great atmosphere and really good track conditions for everyone participating. The new asphalt gave good traction and the builders had succeeded with a silky-smooth track with no bumps whatsoever – and it was also very nice to look at. In the 1/8 Track class it was Mattias Ericsson who got the TQ with his Mugen. It was obvious that fuel consumption was very tight over the five minute qualifiers with some participants being forced to refuel at around the four minute mark. Roland Strom, Running a Serpent/Max combo, was among the few to manage the whole five minutes on a single tank of fuel which gave him the third starting position in the A-main behind Mattias Ericsson and Marcus Lindner.
At the buzzer of the 45 minute A-main the top three sped away from the rest of the field as a well matched group pace wise setting the stage for a very interesting race, with lots of lead changes and passes. Around the middle of the final Roland Strom with the new Serpent 977 Evo upped his game setting the fastest lap times and in the meantime both Marcus and Mattias ran into issues which stopped them challenging for the win. With Marcus and Mattias out of the picture Roland Strom had a perfect race setting the fastest lap time and taking the checkered flag some four laps ahead of Magnus Bengtsson with Lars Haugen rounding of the podium some two laps further down.
