Jarred King takes NSW 4WD Buggy State Title
The 2015 NSW Electric Off-road State Championships were held in the usually hot and sunny Maitland although the weather was very different this time around. Saturday started off with a dry and slippery track but overnight downpour mixed things up for Sunday’s race day. Racing didn’t got underway till lunchtime but then another healthy downpour stopped racing until around 2 pm. The organisers decided to reduce qualifying to three rounds and the finals to two legs meaning the fastest time would win the title. Q1 of the 1/10th 4WD class saw Mitchell Steer coming out fastest from Jarred King, and also Q2 would see Mitchell coming out fastest meaning an early overall TQ for him. Behind Steer, the race was on for the 2 spot on the grid between Jarred King and multi-national champion Josh Pain. At the end Josh grabbed the round TQ in Q3 to take the runner-up spot after the qualifiers from Jarred.
The opening A-main saw Jarred and Josh quickly capitalize on Mitch Steer’s early mistake and the battle was on between King and Pain. Jarred managed to reel him in quite fast, attempted a passing move and he could not pull it off, allowing Pain to take A1 win in 10 laps 5:22 minutes. This was the time to beat for Jarred to take the title. A2 saw the same outcome as A1, Mitch made some early mistakes and it was heel to toe for King and Pain again, this time Jarred was taping Josh’s rear bumper at virtually every corner, letting him know he was there for business. Only 2 laps in, Pain pushed hard down the straight and into the 180 turn corner but he overshot about two car widths wide and Jarred threw it up the inside for a clean and sharp pass and into P1. From there King had to charge hard and fast but clean to then work on Josh Pain’s time. Jarred ran a faultless run and he knew at the end it was a fast run. After the officials deliberated, Jarred finished in 10 laps 5:18 minutes to beat Painy’s time by over 4 seconds and to take the championship.
