RC-Lemans Series Rd6 – Report
The 6th and final round of the 2019 RC-Lemans Series was held in Velp, The Netherlands. With Timo and Rainer Schad having already secured the overall titles in the LMP1 and LMP2 classes, the race was all about the final podium spots. Practice on Saturday would be held in nice Fall weather with sun and mild temperatures making for good racing conditions. The weather for Sunday however looked less promising with showers coming during the qualifiers and the remainder of the day being run under heavy rain. The LMP1 class was held in full wet conditions and it were Andreas Dick, Reinder Wilms and Tobias Weist who would score round TQs. Ultimately it was Andy with the fastest time to take the pole position from Tobias and Reinder. Timo Schad and Peter Plümacher completed the top 5, also in the tie-breaker.
Over in LMP2 it was Roy Pie with the fastest time in the opening qualifier from Axel Kleingeld 2nd and Sascha Lennarzt 3rd. The second of the scored qualifiers then saw Rainer Schad taking the TQ by about four seconds to take the pole position for the main final. Timo Schad would attend both classes and came in 3rd, Axel Kleingeld and Sascha Lennartz would round out the top 5 after the tie breaker.
With the rain getting stronger during the lunch break some drivers opted to not attend the main finals, one of which was LMP1 round TQ Andreas. Therefore only seven LMP1 and nine LMP2 drivers would make the finals. In LMP1 it was Tobias who took profit of Andy’s no-show. However it was Reinder who took the win in A1 in front of P8 qualifier, Michel Finger and Peter Plümacher. A2 saw Tobias with the perfect tyre choice as he took an easy win as did Reinder in A1. The latter would come in 2nd from Peter again with P3. The third and final A-main would not only bring the decision for the day’s win but also the overall runner-up spot in the championship as both Tobias and Reinder were in contention for the vice-championship if one of the two would take the day’s win. Ultimately it was Tobias with the win in A3 from Timo and Reinder. This meant Tobias would take the win at round 6 from Reinder in 2nd and Peter, with his first podium appearance in over ten years, in 3rd. With only his second win this season Tobias would snatch the overall runner-up spot from Tim Altmann in 3rd overall.
