BRCA Clubman Rd1 – Report

The opening round of the 2017 BRCA Clubman series took place this last weekend with a full 110 drivers booked in. The popular Bedworth club hosted this first round and the track was in fantastic condition to greet the drivers for the optional Saturday practice. The weather was perfect all weekend and the racing closer than ever. The Touring Car classes remain on the popular Sorex 32 control tyre for both the 17.5 Blinky and 13.5 Open classes. Colin Jackson made the switch from 17.5 to 13.5 to take the pole and both A-final wins with his Awsomatix. Luke Burr fought hard from 6th on the grid to take the overall 2nd place for Xray and Schumacher’s James Hart took the final podium place in 3rd.

The 17.5 Blinky class was as competitive as ever with only a few seconds covering the top 10 drivers throughout qualifying, and a different driver taking the fastest time in each of the 4 rounds. However the finals were even tougher, with the smallest mistake dropping drivers down the pack. It was a surprised Malc Hall that emerged victorious after 2 master class finals in defensive driving, keeping the chasing pack at bay and making it a clean sweep for Awesomatix. Lisa Keen recovered took second for Xray and Luke Hobson took 3rd with his Serpent.

Returning to the series for the second year, the Formula class switched control tyres from Ride to Sweep and the drivers didn’t take long to get their cars dialled in. BRCA Formula indoor, and reigning Formula National champion Luke Lee set the pace all weekend with a clean sweep in qualifying and took both the A-final wins with his Xray to take a maximum score. James Greener took the runner up place from 4th on the grid for Exotek with Michael Lee taking the final step on the podium for Xray.

Both the BRCA Clubman and National series give half price entries, separate championships and trophies for all under 13 and under 17 drivers. Round 2 of the 7 round series takes place on 7th May at Aldershot, making a return to the series.
