Timmerman wins at Wisconsin Nitro Series
The Wisconsin Nitro Series was finally able to get underway for the 2010 season this weekend. After an unfortunate rain out on the series first week last month, Mother Nature again threatened to “rain on our parade” but we were able to get most of the event in. The threat of poor weather scared away some racers, but 70+ entries showed up for the event and were greeted with a great facility updated with many new features and a new track design. The track operated by the Reedsburg Racers Club is located about 1 hour north of the State Capitol of Madison.
Races were held in 8 Classes, Electric Buggy and Truggy, Intermediate Buggy and Truggy. Expert Buggy and Truggy, Open Short Course and 4×4 Short Course. Qualifying started early since we had the threat of rain later in the afternoon and we quickly progressed to the mains. In the Electric 1/8th it was Brad Shearer who took the TQ honors and the win. In Electric Truggy it was 8 year old Jason Hills who was the Man and also took the TQ and the Win! Jason improves each and every race and don’t let his age fool you, He does a great job and earned this win beating some very good racers. Next up was the Intermediate Truggy class which was also dominated like the other classes before it. It was Scott McTaggart who was the top dog taking TQ and the win in this class. Intermediate 1/8th Buggy was next and the streak of TQ and Wins continued when Jerry Potter took it tone to tone from the pole position. Next on the list it was Short Course 4×4 where it was Trackside’s own Nick “BUCK” Myszkowski who was starting on the Pole position and wanted to also keep the streak going of TQ and Wins but young gun Jason Hills was there to try and whoop on the BUCK! It was a great race in the early laps, but Jason could not keep pace with Buck and Buck keep the streak of TQ and wins going.

As the rain was on the horizon and approaching quickly, we moved the Expert buggy finals before the Short Course A main to try and get that race in before the rain, Originally scheduled for a 30 min A main, I had to make a decision to shorten it to a 7 min dash since the rain started to fall during warm up laps. As we started the finals, the track was already wet and it did not take long for puddles to start forming throughout the layout. Causing havoc on the track, cars and the marshals! Brad Shearer was the TQ of the Expert class running the Tamiya 801 buggy and was able to get off to a good start. Second qualifier Dave Bengston was not as fortunate as Brad and got tangled up in a crash on lap 1 which sent him back to 7th place and he was not able to come back from that. 4th Qualifier Jeremy Whitting got a good start and moved to the 2nd place, stayed with Brad during the early laps but dropped to about 10 seconds back before his unfortunate flameout on lap 11. Mark Cooper who was the winner of the B main and bumped up had the best start moving from 9th to 3rd on lap 1 and kept pace with the leaders only loosing some positions during the fuel stop. 3rd Qualifier Taylor Timmerman who lost 1 spot on the start was able to keep the leaders in reach and was running in 3rd spot during the final few laps of the race when 2nd place Whitting had his flameout allowing Timmerman to move to second place with only 2 laps to go, then with 1 lap to go, our leader Brad who had built up nearly a 20 second lead over the field came up short over the big triple as his buggy struggled for power in the heavy rain and flamed out when it hit the top of the 3rd jump. This tragedy for Brad was a blessing for Taylor who was able to keep things going and come around to take the win in the rain shortened final. Even though Shearer had flamed out on the last lap, he was still able to hold on to the 2nd position and bump up driver Mark Cooper brought home 3rd.

2. Brad Shearer – Tamiya

Even though rain shortened the event, everyone had a great time and the racing was very exciting in all classes. Thanks to all racers who joined us for the opener of the series and again to the Reedsburg Club for all the hard work and great facility. I would also like to thank the sponsors of the Wisconsin Nitro Series. Team Associated, Tekin, J Concepts and AKA. We look forward to seeing everyone for next month’s event July 11th at Marcca.
