Cavalieri retains Reedy Race crown

Cavalieri retains Reedy Race crown

Against seemingly high odds Ryan Cavalieri has successfully defended his Reedy Race of Champions title by a single point over Associated team-mate Ryan Maifield.  The victory at the 20th running of the world famous race makes Cavalieri its most successful champion, this being the 4-time World Champion’s third time to beat the best offroad drivers in the world in the unique heads up racing event that was created by industry pioneer Mike Reedy.  The podium at OCRC Raceway, which rose to the challenge of hosting the great race for the first time, was completed by HB’s Ty Tessmann.

Maifield closes on first Reedy Race title

Maifield closes on first Reedy Race title

Ryan Maifield is closing in on his first Reedy Race of Champions title as Round 5 saw defending Champion Ryan Cavalieri fail to take any points away from his rival. Having topped the standings at the end of the six rounds of 2WD, Maifield came into 4WD with a 2-point advantage over his Associated team-mate Cavalieri but a broken drive shaft in the warm-up meant Maifield lost all his advantage in Round 1 of 4WD. Since then however Maifield has managed twice to finish one position ahead of the two time Reedy Race winner which counting Round 1 as his dropped score means the Arizona driver has pulled a further two points advantage going into the last round. Going into the final round of finals at the 20th running of one of the Worlds most famous races means the scenario is that 5th or higher, irrespective of how Cavalieri does, would give one of the sport’s most spectacular drivers the coveted title.

Evans & Neumann out of Reedy Race hunt

Evans & Neumann out of Reedy Race hunt

It was a bad start to the final day of the Reedy Race of Champions for former winners Dustin Evans and Joern Neumann as disappointing heats put them out of contention to retake the title at the World famous event. In contrast it was a good morning at OCRC Raceway for Team Durango’s Travis Amezcua who became the first driver to take a second win in 4wd as he backed up a win in Round 2 yesterday with another straight forward win.  The other winners of Round 3 were Jared Tebo, who also had an easy win in Heat 1 while Marc Rheinard held off a late challenge from Dustin Evans that would go badly wrong for the 2011 champion.  Title favourites Ryan Maifield and Ryan Cavalieri netted themselves a third place finish each, Maifield getting lucky thanks to Evans incident.

Action packed finish to Reedy Race Day 3

Action packed finish to Reedy Race Day 3

The second round of 4WD at the Reedy Race of Champions would prove to be the most action packed of the day with Team Associated’s Ryan Maifield bouncing back from his Round 1 woes to win a star studded Heat 1 while a controversial Heat 3 would go to TLR ace Dakotah Phend.  Winner of the 5th round of 2WD, Travis Amezcua claimed the tamest of the 3 encounters taking Heat 2 from Round 1 winner Neil Cragg. The results leave defending Champion Ryan Cavalieri holding the points lead two clear of Dustin Evans with Maifield a further point adrift. With four races left on the schedule, going into the final day of the 20th running of the event it’s still wide open as to who will be crowned champion at OCRC Raceway tomorrow in California.

Reedy Race drama as Maifield misses first 4WD encounter

Reedy Race drama as Maifield misses first 4WD encounter

There was drama during the first round of 4WD action at the Reedy Race of Champions as points leader Ryan Maifield failed to make the start of his heat. The points leader after 2WD, having not finished lower than second over his 6 races, the Team Associated driver suffered a rear drive shaft failure during his warm-up laps. While he returned to the pits to try and fix the car the race went ahead without the No.9 starting B44.2. That heat would go the way of team-mate Neil Cragg while the other two heats would be won by HB’s Ty Tessmann and Team Durango’s Ryan Lutz marking their first wins of the 20th running of the event.

Important win for Maifield in Round 5

Important win for Maifield in Round 5

Ryan Maifield secured an important win this morning at the Reedy Race of Champions to pull clear at the top of the points standings as his chief rival Ryan Cavalieri had his worst result of the event. With the Team Associated duo lining up side by side on the front row of the grid for the most anticipated of the 2WD encounters, it was the pole position starting Maifield who got the best start to lead away. With Cavalieri right on his rear wing, the race looked to be a rather straight forward 1-2 points haul for the American pairing however on lap 9 a mistake by Maifield spiced things up. Turning too early for the corner after the Double Double the No.1 Reedy powered Centro B4.2 hooked the piping rolling over back out into the line of Cavalieri. With the two cars briefly stuck together, separating after doing a number of pirouettes, this allowed the field to catch back up. While Maifield got away first, Cavalieri had a number of cars on his tail. Making it down the straight in second a roll over after the step down was enough to allow Dustin Evans, Brian Strange and Kody Numedahl to slip through. Only able to find a way back passed Numedahl a clearly frustrated Cavalieri would only finish 4th.
