Volker takes fifth DHI Cup title

Volker takes fifth DHI Cup title

Ronald Volker has claimed his fifth DHI Cup title, the Team Yokomo driver kicking off his 2014 season in perfect fashion by wrapping up overall victory at the 14th running of the famous Danish event with a second win in Leg 2.  Having dominated A1, the second encounter was not as straight forward for the German ace who had to battle with a damaged car and see off a challenge from fast Finn Viljami Kutvonen. Looking comfortable for the win as the race entered the second half Volker’s new DB7 2014 edition collected the Serpent of David Ehrbar when after an off track excursion it was being place back on the track by the marshal.  Damaging the body of the No.1 car, Volker’s pace dropped as he struggled with his front tyre rubbing badly through left hand corners.  Making his first attack Kutvonen was clearly now faster but just as he looked like making a pass for the lead entering the straight he rolled his Awesomatix.  Dropping back he quickly closed down the gap again but trying a pass on the final lap he touched the Yokomo sending it into a roll for which he waited allowing Volker to complete the final corner in front for the leg & overall win.

Cockerill takes 2WD Buggy DHI Cup title

Schumacher’s Tom Cockerill claimed his first DHI Cup title winning 2WD Buggy thanks to a second A-Main win this morning. The British driver again benefited from a mistake by Top Qualifier Oskar Levin would made an almost identical mistake to the one which Cockerill made himself in A1.  This allowed the Schumacher designer go to the front on lap 4 and despite some close attention from outgoing champion Joern Neumann in the latter part of the race he would see off the German taking the leg by 7/10ths of a second.  The 14th running of the Danish event with offroad introduced three years ago, Cockerill’s win ends Neumann’s domination of the event with the Durango driver being the only one to have previously held the DHI Offroad titles.

Reigning European Champion Martin Bayer made his intentions clear in the opening two rounds of 4WD Buggy qualifying at the DHI Cup taking his Xray XB4 to a pair of 15-laps run at the Odense based event.  In the opening qualifier the Czech ace was the only driver to record 15-laps setting the fastest time ahead new young Team Associated signing Jesper Rasmussen.  The second encounter was a closer affair with defending champion Joern Neumann becoming only the second driver to run 15-laps.  A bad lap by Bayer meant the Durango driver would finish the round just 1/10th of a second adrift.
