Neil Cragg dominates oOple Invernational

The oOple Invernational was held this past weekend at Robinhood Raceway in the central part of England. On most people’s radar at this time for the 2012 Summer Olympics, English racers looked for a reason to get away from the hustle of downtown London and instead convened in the heart of the island country. Making the trip for Team Associated and Reedy was 2005 IFMAR 2WD World Champion and 2011 IFMAR 2WD World Championship Top Qualifier Neil Cragg. Well attended by fellow pro drivers and many club racers, the RHR facility was primed for a great event. In qualifying, Neil Cragg took his Reedy/LRP-powered Factory Team B4.1 and B44.1 to the double TQ positions. The main events went much like qualifying, with Neil’s Team Associated vehicles getting a double victory.

BRCA 1/12th National Series – Announcement

The BRCA have announced it’s calendar of events for the 2012/13 National championship for 1/12th scale electric cars. As usual, the championships will be contested over 6 indoor rounds on carpet, with each driver’s best 4 scores counting towards their final placing in the series. During the season we will visit many of the established venues, but also a couple of new ones. The racing format has been re-evaluated with the hope of attracting more younger and less experienced drivers to the series by offering classes for slower motors and simpler cars as well as retaining the classic open modified class for those who wish to race it. Drivers from overseas are invited to race with us, as are UK based competitors of all ages and experience levels.

Daan Jocobs takes Dutch title with Rd4 win

Round 4 of the 1/10th 200mm Dutch Nationals took place at the MBC de Sluis in Gouda recently. The weather forecast for Saturday was bad with lots rain expected, the Summer in Holland has still to begin. Between the showers on Saturday there was a little time to do some set-up work and driving. A number of drivers, who made the journey despite the forecast had the luck of a dry morning run and after some heavy rain a few drivers could do some practice in the final hour. The forecast for Sunday would give the drivers hope for drier racing on this tight and technical track. During qualification on Sunday morning, drivers were able to do their first rounds in really sunny conditions, however due to limited track action during the past weeks due to bad weather there was little grip on the track. Unfortunately the drivers only had two qualification rounds in the dry to set their best times.

Mike Aliberti wins SC Nationals warmup

The warm-up race for next weekend’s Short Course National Championship was held recently at R/C Madness in Connecticut.  X Factory drivers Mike ‘Lights Out’ Aliberti and Chris Cristo qualified first and second, with privateer John Cravotta third, all driving the new SCX-60CF. It was a very large and busy lay-out with triples, doubles, a table-top and a monster berm, and as is often the case with short course outdoors, the wind make the many jumps interesting.  Aliberti took the first round of qualifying by 10sec over second and that time stood up for the pole position in the main. In the second qualifier Mike was set to improve on that time with an 8-lap run when he did a big wheelie on the straight and the truck flipped over backward. Cristo’s time in Q2, four seconds behind Aliberti’s Q1 time was good for second on the grid.  John Cravotta took Q3 five seconds off Aliberti’s time. It was all Mike Aliberti in the main as he checked out for the win.  Cristo was involved in some first-lap ‘short course racing’ and came out of it 9th.  He put he head down and worked his way through the pack to finish third.

Merlin Depta takes North German title

The last round of the German regional championships took place in Munster last weekend. The race was set to be a thriller with three youngsters, Lars Hoppe, Merlin Depta and Timo Schroeder, with almost the same points in the overall ranking and all in with a chance to take the title of the north German regional champion. Having won the last two rounds, Merlin only had to prevent his two title competitors from winning to take the title. Starting from pole Merlin had Lars behind him and pushing hard from the beginning. Lars flipped his car at the end of the straight and also broke his engine which increased the gap to second. Unfortunately Merlin hit engine problems again, his Max powered Serpent 966 stopping on the main straight. With only Timo Schroeder the only title contender left in the race, he flamed out, which opened the way for ‘1/10th guru’ Ralf Krause to win in front of Friedrich Roehrs and Timo Schroeder. This result would give Merlin Depta the title ahead of Lars Hoppe in 2nd and Timo Schroeder in 3rd.
