Casey Peck does the double at Tumbleweed Classic

Casey Peck does the double at Tumbleweed Classic

TLR was out in full force for the 18th annual Tumbleweed Classic hosted by the ARCOR R/C Club in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In recent years the club has raised enough money to add a separate Nitro only track. This keeps the heavy 1/8th cars off of the super high bite surface of the electric track. A mixture of loamy dirt and 600 pounds of sugar is known for its smooth high traction and 2 ROAR Electric National events. The two separate tracks make for an event that offers a challenge to any driver on the two opposite ends of the race surface spectrum.

The penultimate round of the BeNeLux Championships was run last weekend at Liege, Belgium. X Factory’s Bruno ‘Elvo’ Heremans and Stefan Mesker dominated the event with their X-6 Squareds. Mesker TQ’d the Liege event with Heremans took second on the grid and the pair dominated the three A mains with Elvo taking the first two and Stefan the third to finish 1st and 2nd respectively with Wesley Van Helmond in 3rd. After six of seven rounds, with five to count,  Stefan Mesker leads the Championship one point ahead of Heremans.  Elvo was forced to miss the first race due to a skiing injury, so the pressure is on him to do well in the final race.  Nobody else is within 5 points of Mesker, so Stefan can only lose the Championship if Elvo TQs and wins and Stefan finishes 4th or below.

Belgian Steven Cuypers is German 1/8 Champion

Bad-Breisig-DM-VG8-110911-UB-013

Steven Cuypers is the new German Champion 1/8 scale nitro. The Belgian took the title with a blistering performance during qualifying on Saturday when he caught pole position. But the German Nationals, held at the Motodrom Rhein-Ahr 25 kilometres south of former capital Bonn, was aborted on Sunday afternoon because of heavy thunderstorms in this area. Neither the semi finals nor the final were raced in class 1 which left the competition with an unusual result. Obviously 1/8 racing in Germany seems to be star-crossed because although the German Nationals 2009 in Hildesheim and 2010 in Roetz were affected by rain. This time the one-event German Championship was hampered by rain on all four days. On Thursday and Friday only five of ten practice rounds were run on a dry track. Also the first of five rounds of qualification was lost due to a wet track. And on Sunday rain came back about noon, followed by fearsome thunderbolts.
