Gilliland wins Merlin Fuel Ulster GP

Gilliland wins Merlin Fuel Ulster GP

Ballymoney in Northern Ireland played host to the Merlin Fuel Ulster Grand Prix yesterday with nitro cars making a successful return to the once popular nitro venue. Organised by the UMCC, the inaugural Nitro GP attracted a quality entry including former Irish National 1:10 200mm Champions Chris Steele & Stephen Hayes, and British Championship race winner Mark Gilliland. In qualifying it was Steele with his Murnan Modified RB powered Kyosho that claimed TQ honours from Gilliland’s Xray. In the final the pair had a thrilling battle for the lead, swapping positions lap after lap, but a small error by Steele was eventually enough to allow Gilliland to break clear and take the victory. 2007 Irish Champion Hayes, also driving an NT1 completed the podium. Following the success of the event it is planned to make the Ballymoney circuit a regular fixture on the 2009 Irish National Championship calendar.

Marco Vanni wins Trofeo Novarossi

Marco Vanni wins Trofeo Novarossi

Last weekend saw the annual Trofeo Novarossi race take place at the Fiorano track in Italy and it was attended by the big names like Collari & Balestri. While it was cloudy throughout the weekend it didn’t rain and following qualifying it was young German Shepherd racer Erik Dankel that put his car on pole position ahead of Marco Vanni, Mattia Rinaldi and Dario Balestri. The main final got off to a bad start for the pole man with him being dropped back to last after a collision on the 3rd corner, which left Vanni to take over the lead. Dankel got his head down and managed to pull himself back up to 2nd spot by the end of the 30 minute final, beating Corrado Lotti who finished 3rd, but it was Vanni who took home the win after a trouble free run.

Ryan Lutz dominates RC X-Games

Ryan Lutz dominates RC X-Games

Kyosho team driver Ryan Lutz TQ’ed and won both Pro Buggy with his MP9, and Pro Truggy with his ST-RR at the recent X-Games race. In the buggy class, Lutz got the holeshot and never relinquished the lead, even during pit stops. Lutz’s average lap times were 2.6 seconds a lap faster than eventual second place finisher Thielke, with Kendall Welch taking 3rd. Lutz didn’t get away from the motocross-style starting gate as cleanly in the Truggy final, coming out of the dust in fourth place. But, it wasn’t long before he settled into a blistering pace that would average more than 4.3 seconds faster per lap than second place Michael Paige, also running an ST-RR. Brandon Rohde and Kendall Welch finished third and fourth respectively, giving Kyosho a sweep of the podium plus. The RC X-Games also featured a “Last man standing” event, which was reduced to a demolition derby at its end, a big air contest, and a two-hour, three-man endurance. Kendall Welch scored top honors with his 777WC, showcasing the durability of the Inferno, while Lutz, Rohde, and Welch also teamed up for the endurance, taking top honors in yet another event.
