Kouki Kato doubles at Champ Stadium series opener

The opening round of the popular monthly Champ Stadium off-road series was held at the RC Champ Stadium indoor off-road dirt track in Sagamihara, Japan last weekend. The event saw the running of buggy and truck classes and in 2WD Mod Buggy it was Kouki Kato with the overall TQ from Ono in 2nd and Saito in 3rd. At the start of the 5-minute A-main event Kouki made contact and dropped down the order a bit, handing Saito the lead with Ono in 2nd, however Kouki was able to recover quickly, taking over P2 and starting to put pressure on the leader. Saito was able to hold onto the lead until the very last lap, when he made a mistake under the pressure of Kouki Kato who would in return take the lead and also the win in the single-legged A-final.

Sobue tops seeding at TITC

Akio Sobue has topped seeding at the TITC, with the Infinity driver quickest from Yokomo’s Souta Goto over 3-consecutive laps of this year’s high speed layout at the Infinity Addict Circuit. In the first of the two controlled practice runs, the 2018 Champion was fastest from team-mate Naoto Matsukura but rocket round conditions for the second round produced a big improvement in times as Sobue went almost half a second clear, this time ahead of Goto who was placed in the slowest of the much depleted Modified field. Jilles Groskamp completed the Top 3 ahead of Viktor Wilck, while Matsukura, unable to better his opening time, dropped to fifth with Atsushi Hara completing the Top 6. Unfortunately the coronavirus has impacted hugely on the international entry at the 18th running of Asia’s most famous RC. Concerns over the health of their drivers in travelling to Asia means multiple champions Xray are not in attendance meaning we wont get the opportunity to watch Alexander Hagberg attempt to defend the title he won here last year. Also missing from the entry are TITC regulars and World Champions Bruno Coelho, Ronald Volker and Marc Rheinard.

Stone & Seckold win at King Of The Valley

The 2020 King Of The Valley race took place at the Maitland Off-Road Radio Controlled Car Club of Maitland, New South Wales, Australia last weekend. Held over three days, the annual meeting is always a good one, and with many interstate entries it was going to be a tough race. The track is large in size and the dirt surface has vegetable oil applied to it, this makes for a super consistent surface with great grip, meaning the racing is always going to be close and tough. With a revised format the club chose to run a Reedy style system with heads up racing for all qualifiers and a 40-minute final for Nitro and triple 10-minute finals for Electric. Ultimately it was Xray driver, Michael Stone with the win in E-Buggy from HB Racing driver, Jackson Beale and Matt Seckold (Xray) in 3rd. The Nitro Truggy win belonged to Peter Seckold with Peter Eggleton and Brad Stafford rounding out the top 3.

DJ Apolaro TQs & wins at Florida Nitro Series Rd4

Last weekend saw the running of the fourth round of the Florida Nitro Series. In the 1/8th scale Pro class it was a tight battle for the TQ. Ultimately DJ Apolaro would take the overall TQ with Gianni Giorgio and Roniel Regalado coming in 2nd and 3rd respectively. For the main there was a little bit of a rain delay, but the organisers were able to get the race going, however they shortened the mains from 30 to 20 minutes and this made is possible to race. When the final started DJ had to pit after just the 4th lap for a quick tune and this would drop him to 6th, while this allowed Gianni and others to get up front with the lead. While leading Gianni would make an error just a few laps later, meanwhile DJ was working his way back to the front pack. After about 13 laps DJ was back to the front and was able to keep the lead till the end. In the end is was DJ Apolaro (Capricorn) 1st, Tony Rice (Shepherd) in 2nd some three laps down and Mike Strack (Xray) in 3rd just five seconds off Tony.

Thanks to DJ Apolaro for the report.

2019/20 Essex Winter Series Rd4 – Report

The penultimate round of the 2019/20 Essex Winter Series took place this weekend. With storm Dennis creating some difficult weather conditions around the country, the entry count ended up being a little lower than the usual full sell-out as some people were prevented from travelling. However, the competition was still close and battles for every position were important. Elliott Harper was already within touching distance of the overall Modified championship, but didn’t get the event off to the start he would need to secure the title on the day – making a number of mistakes in Q1. This allowed Kyle Branson to take the first round with his Capricorn, just ahead of the Yokomo of Harley Eldridge and the Awesomatix of Chris Grainger. Elliott took fourth, with Billy Fletcher, now confirmed as the Super Stock Champion, switching to Modified for the final events and taking a very impressive fifth in round.
