Sawada & Kiyoyi to start from pole at RCI V2

Jin Sawada will start the opening round of the OneTen series presented by Infinity from pole position having taken all rounds of qualifying this afternoon at RCI V2 in Shanghai. The Infinity driver secured his first pole position in the series at the end of the Q2 where he went faster than his Q1 time by a second, while Rocket Zhang and Gary Huang swapped places to end up 2nd and 3rd, repeating that result again in Q3 and ensuring thats how they will start the final. Commenting on his qualifying the Japanese driver said he was happy to make his first TQ after 9 attempts in the series. Commenting on his car he mentioned that he removed 30 grams to bring the car down to the minimum weight of 1320 grams, which he said improved the reactions of the car. Looking to the final, and a full 10 car grid on such a small track, Jin admits that it will be very difficult to avoid contact with lapped traffic, but he will keep his head down and remain focussed on trying to take the win.

Sawada clear up front at OneTen in Shanghai

The opening qualifier for the first round of the new 2019/20 OneTen series presented by Infinity has been completed and it was Jin Sawada who set the pace. As he had done all through free practice on Friday and in controlled practice this morning, the Japanese driver was in complete control. Leading the charge for Infinity, as reigning champion Akio Sobue was called up to test the new IF14-11 in Japan this weekend, the young driver was pleased with his car however as temperatures had risen he felt the traction was lower compared to the morning. Ending the run some 4 seconds up on 2nd placed Gary Huang, it was RCI local pros Rocket Zhang and Motor King in 3rd and 4th respectively.

The opening round of the 2019/20 Xray Racing Series Slovakia was held at the Hudy Arena in Trencin last weekend. The event saw the running of both off-road and on-road classes with practice on Friday and racing on Saturday. In 2WD Buggy it was Max Götzl with the TQ in round 1 followed by Martin Bayer and Ales Bidovsky. Max was able to score another TQ run in Q2, again in front of Martin and Ales. Q3 then went to Martin, but as Max had faster time in the Q1, I took the overall TQ as Martin lined up 2nd and Ales 3rd.

Max Chung wins Mini class at 2019 GIRC

The 2019 GRC International RC Car Championship was held at the GRC Circuit in South Korea, with drivers from Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Japan and Germany in attendance. In the popular Mini class, local driver Jae Kyu Kim dominated qualify to take the overall TQ with Hong Kong driver Max Chung in 2nd. In the opening A-final Kim also showed an unbeatable pace with a best lap of 19.864 and he would hold the upper hand to take the win, the second final however was crucial, as Max Chung had the hole shot and passed Kim on the inside of the first corner. Kim and Max would battle for the whole five minutes and ultimately Max crossed the line first, just 0.39s ahead of Kim. The third final was intense for both drivers, again Max had a good start and was already on the inside line in the first corner, while Kim rolled his car, putting him back to 3rd. Kim however quickly recovered and soon reclaimed 2nd position. Up front Max tried everything to hold onto the lead and he crossed the line ahead of Kim by 3.5s. Myung Kook Lee would complete the top 3 podium result.

Thanks to Max Chung for the report.

BRCA 1/10th IC & GT8 Nationals Rd8 – Report

The final round of the BRCA 1/10th IC & GT8 Nationals was held at Brooklands Raceway in Kent last weekend. Despite a poor weather forecast many drivers made the trip with points and final championship places up for grabs. Saturday was wet and rainy all day with only a few drivers venturing on to the track but most preparing wet cars for race day. No rain at driver’s briefing but a damp track made qualifying interesting. Round 1 of 200mm Touring saw Mark Green take TQ with 15 laps, Matthew Cook came in 2nd and Stewart Mcleod in 3rd. In 220mm TQ Devendra Mahatme scored 14 laps with Phil Edwards and Jamie Paton behind. GT8 Q1 TQ was Christopher Slater from Gareth Bell and Craig Woods.

2019 RCGP World Series finale – Report

The final rounds of the RCGP World Series were held last weekend at Thunder Alley Raceway in Beaumont, California. Saturday saw round 7 of the series take place, the penultimate round of this year’s championship. In Friday’s Seeding Practice it was Davide Ongaro, the six-time winner and 2019 champion, who emerged on top – however, HB Racing star David Ronnefalk had an equally strong showing, leading the way for most of the day and displaying impressive one-lap pace. Seen for the first time in Q1 was the “drop” start system, which featured an evenly split grid across two rows, adding an extra challenge in the fight to the first corner. Come the race, it would be American Cole Ogden leading a 1-2 for HB Racing, with teammate Ronnefalk finishing 6.7 seconds down. Infinity’s Kyle McBride took the holeshot and gapped the field early on along with Ogden and Ronnefalk, but a small mistake would drop him to third, whilst Ronnefalk’s chances of closing down his teammate were dashed in a similar fashion. Davide Ongaro would take fifth, with Max Mört fifth and Juan Carlos Canas in sixth.
