MRCZ Open International race – Report

The MRCZ club in Belgium held their annual International race this past weekend. One of the longest running races in Belgium, that started life back in the 1980’s mainly as a 1/12th scale event attracting drivers like David Spashett or Oscar Jansen, changed its approach over the year, becoming more beginners friendly with classes such as Formula, Tamiya Truck or 1/12th GT. The 2018 edition made no exception, offering many different classes to compete in. The otherwise premier Touring Modified class only attracted a handful of drivers. Thomas Stockman, a multiple previous winner of the event and Florian Joos would be the biggest contenders for the overall victory. Thomas claimed Q1, but Florian convincingly won the remaining four qualifiers. Thomas lined up 2nd on the grid in front of Pieter Saelens, Liam Van de Wouwer and David Joos. Florian Joos (Xray) took the overall victory from Thomas Stockman (Xray), Pieter Saelens (Yokomo), Liam Van de Wouwer (ARC) and David Joos (Xray).

All the classes and the racing were action packed and exciting for all the racers who participated in this event. After qualifying, it seemed like some wins were a sure thing, but main events don’t always go as predicted. Throughout qualifying and the mains, one thing that didn’t show in the 2WD Modified was a clear winner. It would take true talent to shine in this group and local Las Vegas boy Broc Champlin was shining bright. Starting with grabbing the TQ spot, Broc would take the win in the A1 main. Not to be outdone, his brother Blake Champlin was on pace behind him and would take the A2 win. So which Champlin brother take the over all win. The two would battle all the way end tone in the A3 main being separated by only 4-tenths of a second with Broc crossing the line first to take the over all win.

YEG On-Road Classic – Report

The inaugural YEG On-Road Classic was held last weekend and the blizzard for people flying, and driving into YEG, Edmonton was only strong enough to keep a few pre-registered attendees away. But with a modest 94 Entries, spread across seven Classes and 15 heats of racing, made for a relaxing and enjoyable for all. From brand new drivers, to National Champions the field was broad in skill level. The new layout provided racers with a good combination of high speed turns, and unique passing opportunities. With traction having to build over the course of the weekend, it proved drivers to be adaptive. Spec tires played an interesting role in helping drivers gain more traction throughout the weekend. The Sweep Racing QTS32 “True Blue” was the TC Spec tire of choice, whilst the GravityRC “White Stripe” was used in the 1/12 spec classes, both were more than capable of keeping the field nice and close in all grip conditions. With results available via live timing all weekend, racers and spectators were able to follow along in the pits on one of the many TVs and projectors available, or simply on their phone or computer.
