Ty Tessmann wins at Grass Roots Series opener

The opening round of the Grass Roots Series was held at Thunder Alley RC Raceway in Beaumont, California. With 148 entries for the 1-day race, this was the first time in a while that the Californians could get on a track to race due to the rain they had. It was a lot of fun, lots of big jumps and a technical layout. The track started out with some muddy spots and remained wet throughout the day, due to the moisture in the track it developed a lot of ruts and bumps so at times it was difficult to navigate. Qualifying went well for newly signed Xray driver Ty Tessmann, he managed to TQ both rounds over Drew Moller (Mugen) who qualified second and Cody King who qualified third.  In the main Drew Moller starting from the second position would challenge Ty throughout the race, at one point Tessmann would make a mistake allowing Moller to get by and then the latter would make a mistake giving Ty back the lead. The first fuel stop both came in together, on the second fuel stop Ty was approaching lapped traffic so his Gord called him in a bit earlier giving Drew the lead for a lap. On the next lap Moller pitted and Ty regained the lead and was able to create a gap, and ultimately went on to take the win from Drew Moller in second and Shawn Kirkman (Tekno) in third.

Lutz & Bornhorst sweep January Jam

The annual January Jam was held at Flowood RC in Mississippi in pretty cold conditions. Ryan Lutz and teammate Joe Bornhorst would battle for the TQ honours in the 1/8th classes and ultimately it was Joe who TQ’d Nitro Buggy and Nitro Truck while Ryan top qualified the E-Buggy category. Nitro Buggy was the final race of the day and the most entertaining. Both Joe and Ryan again got off to a close start swapping the lead a couple times before Ryan again made a bigger mistake. Lutz then had a terrible lap with 3 crashes as the track was developing some character with some bumps as well as some dust. Joe got out to a 10 second plus lead halfway through and Ryan really thought he had it in the bag. But nearing the final five minutes Bornhorst made some mistakes as his tires were making it hard for him to drive and Ryan was able to catch up and put in a pass. Lutz could feel something going out in his buggy’s steering and was just praying it would stay together to finish the race, and fortunately with Joe pushing hard behind him, Bornhost made another bobble or two giving Ryan Lutz the cushion he needed to bring home the bacon.
