The 2014 Sidewinder Nitro Explosion was held at the Heritage R/C Park in Chula Vista, CA. The annual event promoted and directed by Jimmy Babcock continually brings out the best drivers from Southern California. Qualifying started with the awaited Ryan and Ryan show with TLR’s Ryan Maifield taking round 1 of the 1/8th Pro buggy class with Ryan Cavalieri piloting the new AE prototype to 2nd in the round. Truggy qualifying in round 1 also went the way of Maifield taking the 0 qual point for the round and holding an early edge in both competitive classes. The detailed track built by Don Vinkemulder had that distinctive California flow incorporating rollers, floating jump sections and elevation changes. With a slightly watered surface, tire wear was nonexistent during qualifying with only dry sections really forming toward the end of un-watered races.

During last weekend’s final round of the Portuguese 1/8th scale Nitro Buggy national championship in Ortigosa Serpent’s Carlos Duraes (Serpent) took the win, but the race was also on for the overall championship between Bruno Coelho and his Xray team mate Miguel Matias. In the 45 minute final Bruno and Miguel started from 3rd and 4th respectively and in the beginning stages Miguel quickly moved into the lead, constantly opening a gap on Bruno. In order to save tyres and to keep the car in one piece Miguel started to drive very conservatively, eventually falling back to 3rd place only 2 seconds behind 2nd placed Ricardo Monteiro (TLR). Bruno ended 2 laps down in 4th place and this meant Miguel and Bruno would be tie on points with the better end for Bruno as Miguel had a DNF to count that handed Bruno Coelho the 2014 national championship title.
