Jefferies & Maddison win EWS opener

Jefferies & Maddison win EWS opener

The first round of the Essex Winter Series championship took place this weekend. Recognised as one of the largest on-road championships, once again a near-capacity entry kicked off the fifth edition of the series. In the Modified class, defending champion Stefan Chodzynski would have his work cut out for him, as most of the UK’s top drivers had committed to competing the full championship, in an effort to take the crown away from the Capricorn driver. In the opening qualifier, Olly Jefferies showed he meant business, taking his new Xray T4’16 to the fastest time, in front of the Capricorn of Kyle Branson and the Schumacher of new BRCA national champion Elliott Harper.

Andy Hastings wins BRCA 1/8th On-road finale

Andy Hastings wins BRCA 1/8th On-road finale

The final round of the BRCA National On-Road Nitro Championship took place at the Mendip circuit in Weston Super Mare. During practice on Saturday it was warm and dry all day with the grip coming up steadily throughout the day. Sunday race day the weather remained the same after three rounds of qualifying, Shepherd driver Andy Hastings was sitting in 4th place. In the final round of qualifying, Andy was on to improve his time and position, however a stripped 2nd gear from a stone prevented any improvement. The start of the A-final Andy saw drop back to 5th behind David Spashett. After 5 minutes of nose to tail racing, an engine cut for David allowed Andy past and wind in on 4th position, eventually getting past and start catching the leaders. Around the 17 minute mark Andy moved into the lead – a quick tyre change on the front left at the 20 minute pit stop saw Andy maintain his lead – and settle into a steady pace to the finish. After 108 he crossed the finishing line in first position followed by Neil Diver (Mugen) in 2nd and John Carr (Serpent) in 3rd position.

Bowie Ginting wins at Infinity GP Rd4

Bowie Ginting wins at Infinity GP Rd4

Round 4 of Infinity Grand Prix was held at the JITC Senayan Track, Jakarta with a total of 50 racers attending in four nitro on-road classes including 1/8th Open and 1/10th 200mm Touring. Bowie Ginting would score a late 26 laps TQ run after some severe problems to take the overall TQ in front of Trin Tanongsakchaikul with 25 laps. Five seconds behind Trin, Adrian Sutanto would line up in third. The 200mm class final would start pretty late that day when the track’s traction was at its highest. Right from the beginning Bowie was able to open a gap on the field while Trin ran into trouble due to traction rolling which ultimately resulted in a chunked tyre. Things got even worse for him as during the pitstop for tyres his car’s engine suffered a flame out which gave Bowie even more room to breath up front. At the end of the final Bowie took the win with a 6 laps margin from Trin, while Fayakhun Andriadi rounded out the top 3 result.

Coelho takes controversial A1

Coelho takes controversial A1

Bruno Coelho has won the opening A-Main at the 1:10 4WD World Championships in Japan however the Top Qualifier’s win over Naoto Matsukura would be controversial.  Making a mistake at the tabletop causing his Xray to land off the side of the jump and onto the next section of the track, while he would wait on the chasing pack his rivals felt he should have given position as the error led to him shortcutting the track.  Resuming ahead of second place starter Michal Orlowski, Coelho would go on to win the 5-minute encounter by 2.3 second from Matsukura with David Ronnefalk completing the Top 3.  Unfortunately for Orlowski he would make a mistake on lap 3 that would drop him to 9th from where he could only recover to 6th.

Top Qualifier Coelho puts in fastest run in Q5

Top Qualifier Coelho puts in fastest run in Q5

Having sewn up the overall TQ at the World Championships yesterday in the fourth round of qualifying, Bruno Coehlo would lay down the gauntlet in the final qualifier this morning in Japan posting the fastest time of the event to claim his 4th TQ of the five rounds.  With the 1:10 Offroad World Championship’s Rookie already decalred Top Qualifier, Q5 was all about determining the starting order behind the Xray driver.  The driver most expected to challenge Coelho for the win, Naoto Matsukura went into the concluding qualifier needing a second or better to put his Kyosho second on the grid but it wasn’t to be.  A number of mistakes would leave him only 12th for the round, meaning Michal Orlowski would hold onto his overnight second overall with him ending his qualifying with a P2 run.  Having sat 12th at the end of yesterday, Jared Tebo would complete the Top 3 in Q5, his best qualifying run securing the former champion a spot in the final. Starting 7th, the Kyosho driver is the best American starter with Ryan Maifield the only other US driver to make the A-Main in 9th.  Having been the best represented manufacturer in the 2WD A-Main, a noticeable absence from the grid will be defending 4WD champions Team Associated, their biggest hope Ryan Cavalieri having a bad final qualifier.
