Joe Kerry takes Rd9 of British 200mm Nats

The last round of the 2013 British 200mm National series took place at the fantastic Cotswold circuit at Kemble airfield. The conditions were much better than expected with dry weather all weekend and even some sunshine on the Sunday as well. This gave all drivers plenty of time to find the right set-up on Saturday. At the end of practice it was Joe Kerry setting the pace with his O.S. powered Serpent 747 consistently hitting 16.1 laptimes.

MIP Pro8 conversion kit for the SCTE truck

MIP Pro8 conversion kit for the SCTE truck

Prototypes of MIP’s Pro8 buggy have been around for some time and now the company released a first official image of the kit. The set is designed to convert a Losi SCTE 1.0 or TLR SCTE 2.0 into a super lightweight 1/8th buggy that will make use of the chassis, drivetrain and most of the suspension parts of TLR’s 1/10th 4WD short course truck. The lightweight drivetrain parts and somewhat lighter shocks combined with the possibility to run lighter motors and battery packs makes for an overall lighter buggy, perfect for tight indoor and outdoor tracks. There is no official release date yet but we guess it the kit should hit the stores soon.

New World Champion to be crowned in Japan

New World Champion to be crowned in Japan

1:8 Onroad is set to crown a new World Champion this week with the news that reigning World Champion Robert Pietsch has not made the trip to Japan for the 18th running of IFMAR’s longest running World Championships.  The German has been forced to miss the chance to defend his title due to being struck down with pneumonia.  Having attended the Warm-up Race at the Keitune Racing Speedway back in May, the Mugen driver struggled while fellow Mugen driver & World title favourite Takaaki Shimo using O.S. dominated with many rumours circulating since then that Novarossi were struggling to get their engines to suit the specialised track.  Having received an e-mail along with a medical cert from Pietsch, his fuel sponsor Jarb Ratanarat of Maxima said its a real shame the strong advocate of onroad nitro racing can’t attend as he feels despite his showing at the Warm-up race  he believes he would have had a real chance at a second title.

Xray XB9e low-profile buggy body

Xray XB9e low-profile buggy body

Xray introduce this ultra low-profile body shell for the XB9e 1/8th off-road buggy. The high performance body is of a low centre of gravity and very aerodynamic design to not only stand out from the crowd but also increase the performance of the buggy. The sides of the body were specially designed to perfectly match the shape of the side guards, preventing dirt from entering. The rear body mount hole is oval-shaped to ensure the necessary body movement when landing jumps, while the mild cab forward design in combination with the low profile design ensures perfect aerodynamics. The body comes clear, including window masks and overspray film.

On the Grapevine – Chico

On the Grapevine - Chico

During my return journey from the 1:10 Electric Buggy World Championships in Chico, California, I was trying to gather together my thoughts for my latest column and I have to admit it was a struggle.  One would think that having just attended a World Championships the difficulty would be deciding what to leave out rather than what could I include that might make for somewhat interesting reading.  While the event was like the Frankfurt International Motor Show in terms of new buggy releases and appearances of prototypes, photos of which got quickly dissected by racers as they circled the globe via the interweb, there was actually very little else of interest coming out of the pits.  Perhaps it was the fact that the daily schedule left little time for chatting between runs, highlighted perfectly by Lee Martin eating a hamburger as though he was doing a challenge for the TV show ‘Man Versus Food’. Maybe it had something to do with many of the drivers appearing to have spent the week prior in Vegas perfecting their Poker Faces.  While the event ended with 5-minutes of racing that even Hollywood’s best script writers might have struggled to come up with in terms of drama and the final outcome, overall for me the event was missing that World Championship factor and it wasn’t for the lack of effort.
